The Thracian sanctuary

“Sanctuary of Orpheus” – a megalithic monument from 6000 years ago with worldwide scientific importance. Located near the village of Tatul, this megalithic sanctuary includes ancient rock carvings and stone formations. It is believed to have been used for religious and astronomical purposes by ancient Thracian civilizations. Besides a sanctuary for offering sacrifices to the ancient Thracian deities, it was certainly also a center for observing the sunrise and sunset on certain days of the year. It is a unique cultural-historical monument that is unlike any other discovered on our lands. It is also called the “Bulgarian Stonehenge”. It is inseparably connected with the “Perperikon” complex. There are hypotheses that this is the grave of the famous mythological hero Orpheus.
